I'm trying to get my phone to work for blogging... not having luck as of yet! That way I can post pics of my work etc. I came upon this article.... Lady Ga Ga gets an art column... Really? Sorry if you are a fan....I am not a monster. For those of us in John's Seminar class... I believe that she is "Bad Conceptual" art. http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/37360/pixar-unveils-art-for-upcoming-brave-breath-taker-lady-gaga-becomes-an-art-columnist-and-more-must-read-art-news/

I suspect that even if I had had the space to spread out these ideas on separate canvases, the work would have proceeded on a single format alone, in as much as I felt the painting had to experience its own life-span in time

How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone. ~ Coco Chanel

Reading the Complete Artist's Way: Creativity as a Spiritual Practice, Julia Cameron.

732 pages!!! Can't seem to sit with a book like this and read page to page... I've been skipping and hitting pages here and there. I'm excited to feel like I am starting to connect with an "old friend," spirituality. It's all good.

Tomorrow I am having my first BIG crit with my committee .... brinG IT! :)))

the clay will not conform to what I want it to be!!! maybe today it'll have a better attitude!

in painting studio for a while...then back at the two larger clay pieces......

all STILL quiet in the painting studio.

Howard Hodgkin lecture to art students: "I want to talk to you about money.....if you are wondering how to be an artist, the most important thing of all is that you should be paid for doing it. But never, whatever one does for you, feel grateful....The gratitude is on the other side."

Photo Quality Figurative Oil Paintings by Alyssa Monks

Photo Quality Figurative Oil Paintings by Alyssa Monks

I came accross this painter while researching white light...... I think she is too good to not mention and have archived for myself for future reference..... I hope you enjoy !

march 9, 2010

Starting another new painting today....the other is in a 'drying' stage. Excited about these next paintings...the colors are very different from the last 'memory series' and are from a new memory. time will tell.

Yesterday was a great day in the ceramics studio....I was able to get alot done......refired Derec's exchange piece ....I think it looks pretty good!

I started throwing 2 larger pieces...although I don't think they are as big as I want them to be....I feel like they will be an inbetween size....if that makes sense....but I'm ok with that....i will learn from these two pieces and carry that knowledge onto the larger ones! Besides....my wrist and fingers are beat up! ah youth..... why are you wasted on the young?!

Linda....

I would like to make a formal request....

is there anyway that we could extend the 'due date' for our shared pieces? Say one more week?

For one reason or another alot of us thought it was due after break....me included.

Thanks!

First let me say that I am sorry for all of the tech. glitches yesterday during my class. Here is the link to the last video from my powerpoint that did not show up.

Secondly, Linda said something that hit home... she uses this analogy ....she said, "either you are a player or fan."

Sadly, I think I am a REALLY REALLY BiG fan of ceramics who wishes she was a playa'!

I am not willing to give up ceramics, period. I was told at the beginning of my MA carreer that I had to give it up! So the first semester I did. As you know... that didn't last.

So for now...I will be a fan trying to work it out with the mindset that oneday I will be a player. Please be patient with me. My intentions are good and like everything else I have done in my artistic career the process is slow and difficult. .... its a 'pleasure in pain' thing.

I forgot why I love firing a gas kiln....the firing went well... (thanks to all who patiently helped me with the process)

Firing a gas kiln forces me to stay in the ceramic studio and work a long period of time...devoted to ceramics only. I LOVE it.

I learned that my dark clay body does not like to be refired. I lose the quality of "sexy bitch clay" (thanks Gracia for it's name! ) that I like so much.

I learned that I am going to have to experiment more with glazes. I really don't like any of the ones that I mixed.

I learned that I am going to have to try and fire to cone 10 if I want my red. This will be the next experiment.

I most learned that clay influences my painting and visa versa.

I don't have any exciting pictures to post of my work...but if you're interested to see my refired pieces they are in a box near my shelf. I need a "better" clear glaze...any help will be appreciated!

Feb. 7, 2011

So Sunday was a good work day....

I mixed a bunch of test glazes... RED!

Finished one piece..(letting it dry to alter it)

Tried Gracia's slump mold to throw from... liked it. Don't know what it'll look like after I take it out of the mold. But it was fun!

Tried creating another version of my "bowl" form inspired by Annes project! THANKS anne!!

Reglazed my older pieces to see what happens when I refire them....

Time to fire the mohawk!

I love days when I get alot done!

Friday, February 4, 2011

just for fun

I found a link on Linda's blog for a critique generator.... here is the critique I "generated"!!! too funny!

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned yet that the aura of the facture makes resonant the exploration of montage elements.

Does any more need to be said?!

Feb 4, 2011

Why the hell can't I REALLY let go of making a form? Meaning push it so its wobbly..clunky...woman handled???!!!! I've allowed myself to do so on the rims of my pieces, but not for the rest.

So I decided to just cut open a thrown piece and go from there! Damn ....#$!@#$....$%@!$%^@#

A Thousand Thousand Times

Under cover of footsteps returning at evening to a tower inhabited by mysterious symbols
Eleven in number the snow that melts as I grasp it in my hand
This snow i love has dreams and i am one of those dreams
I who grant to day and night as much youth as they need
They are two gardens where my hands walk with nothing to do and while the eleven symbols rest i share a love which is a copper and silver mechanism in the hedges
I'm one of the most delicate gears in earthly love and earthly love hides the other loves the way the symbols hide the spirit from me
A lost stab whizzes past the walker's ear i've stripped the sky like a marvelous bed
My arm hangs from the sky with a rosary of stars descending day by day whose first bead will disappear into the sea instead of my vivid colors
Soon there won't be anything but snow on the sea
The symbols appear at the door they are eleven different colors and their respective dimensions would make you die of pity
One of them has to bend down and cross its arms to enter the tower i hear another one on fire in a prosperous region and this one on horseback riding industry
The uncommon mountainous industry like the wild donkey that feeds on trout
The hair the long dappled hair characterizes the symbol wearing the doubly ogival buckler beware of the idea rolled along by mountain streams
My construction my beautiful construction page by page house insanely glazed in the wide open sky the wide open earth it's a fault in the rock suspended by rings from the curtain rod of the world it's a metallic curtain that comes down on divine inscriptions that you don't know how to read
The symbols have never affected anyone but me i am born in the infinite disorder of prayers
I live and die from one end of this line to the other that strangely measured line which connects my heart to the ledge of your window through it i communicate with all the prisoners in the world

Art & Fear (from art and fear by d.bayles and t.orland)

Artmaking involves skills that can be learned. The conventinal wishdom here is that while "craft" can be taught, "art" remains a magical gift bestowed only by the gods. Not so. In large measue becoming an artist consists of learning to accept yourself, which makes your work personal, and in following your own voice, which makes your work distinctive. Clearly, these qualities can be nurtured by others. Even talent is rarely distinguishable, over the long run, from perseverance and lots of hard work.

Even the separation of art from craft is largely a post-Renaissance concept, and more recent still is the notion that art transcends what you do, and represents what you are. In the past few centuries Western art has moved from unsigned tableaus of orthodox religious secenes to one-person displayes of personal cosmologies. "Artist" has gradually become a form of identity which (as every artist knows) often carries with it as many drawbacks as benefits.

Consider that if artist equals self, then when (inevitably) you make flawed art, you are a flawed person, and when (worse yet) you make no art, you are no person at all! It seems far healthier to sidestep that vicious spiral by accepting many paths to succesful artmaking -- from reclusive to flamboyant, intuitive to intellectual, folk art to fine art. One of those paths is yours.

The new semester!

Ready, set, go!

"General duties of a student: pull everything out of your teacher, pull everything out of your fellow students, consider everything an experiment, be self-disciplined, nothing is a mistake, the only rule is to work, don't try to create and analyze at the same time--they're different processes....."

John Cage

The new year. ....... New year.

I've been in the painting studio for a couple of weeks now. Finishing up paintings from last semester. One is closer to where I envision it to be ... the other is far away, but i'm confident in the progress it's made so far. They will be two very powerful paintings that I will be able to add to my show in my spring show in May.

I feel this needs to be said.... I miss my mother, Susan, terribly. She was and still is a very big influence in my work. Sadly, she died before she could see my first solo show this past Nov. She would have been proud, like all good mothers would be. "I knew you were always special, my special little girl."

Time to press on....
